The Weak Runner’s Head Start
Why You Can’t Hire Your Way Out of the AI Panic
Let’s be real for a second. If you’ve spent five minutes on the internet this week, you’ve hit a wall of pure, unadulterated panic.
Everyone is terrified. Founders are scared to give up control. Hiring managers are worried every resume is an AI hallucination. And the market is flooded with self-proclaimed "AI Gurus" offering to save your business for a nominal enterprise fee.
My initial reaction to all of this? Take a breath. We’ve seen this movie before.
Over the forty-some years I’ve been messing around in corporate ecosystems, I’ve watched multiple of these "extinction-level" technical revolutions hit the beach. In the 80s and 90s, we watched typing pools, typesetters, and mailrooms evaporate. In the 2000s, mass digital reporting and automated communication tools wiped out direct mail producers and inbound sales reps. In the 2010s, mobile apps and eCommerce flipped the entire retail paradigm on its head.
Every single one of those shifts felt like the end of the world to the people living inside them. And every single time, the exact same corporate playbook unfolded: companies panicked, threw massive budgets at external "experts," and built a mountain of hyper-complex Process Theater to prove they were "innovating."
All the latest change management research agrees on one fundamental truth: “Fear and anxiety always make a technical implementation run smoother!”
Oh, wait. Hold on. That’s actually the exact opposite of what the data says.
The reality is that rushing into a technical shift out of sheer FOMO creates an environment where people feel disposable, which triggers immediate, silent operational sabotage. And to make matters worse, you’re likely trying to fix that internal anxiety by looking for an external savior.
The Current Landscape
There is an absolute absence of true AI experts.
This is 1999 all over again. Remember when half the people who claimed to be "Dot-Com Specialists" or "CRM Architects" turned out to be guys who had just opened the software twice? History is repeating itself. An "AI Expert" right now is frequently just an operator who has spent six months using a prompt window on a platform that will be completely redesigned by next Tuesday. They don’t have a multi-year pedigree; they just have a microscopic head start.
If you are looking to bring AI into your workflow, stop looking outside your walls for a magical savior. 5 years from now, that 6-to-12-month head start won’t even be visible.
Why? Because a weak runner starting early cannot win a race against a fundamentally strong runner.
Your best operational move right now isn't to buy a pedigree. It’s to look at your existing roster, find the individual with the highest learning agility and a relentless, borderline annoying curiosity, and hand them the keys to the vehicle. You don’t need someone who memorized yesterday’s software; you need someone who knows how to learn tomorrow’s system.
